Legislating for Brexit: directly applicable EU law

    Thursday, 12 January, 2017

Some 5,000 EU regulations apply in the UK, They largely concern technical details required by other EU legislation and are 'directly applicable' in all EU Member States - they don't (generally) need further implementation. What are these laws and what will Brexit mean for them? This Briefing Paper explains what ‘directly applicable’ EU law is, how it applies in the UK, and estimates how many EU regulations are in force. It is one of a series of Library briefings on different elements of the EU acquis and Brexit, and will be updated periodically.

    Grouse shooting

    Thursday, 27 October, 2016

Grouse shooting takes place on moorlands managed for the birds. The Government believes that grouse shooting makes a significant economic, social and environmental contribution. However, others are concerned that grouse moor management is leading to environmental damage and the illegal killing of birds of prey. Two public petitions have been launched on this matter, on both sides of the argument. The Petitions Committee took evidence from witnesses on 18 October 2016, and a debate is scheduled for 31 October 2016.

Troubled waters? Negotiating fish quotas post-Brexit

    Friday, 07 October, 2016

Over 90% of UK fishers said that they would vote for Brexit. Some believed that post-Brexit they would be able to catch more fish. EU Referendum: Impact on UK agriculture policy

    Thursday, 26 May, 2016

Most farming organisations are taking a 'remain' or neutral position ahead of the EU Referendum on the grounds that there is too much uncertainty around a potential UK approach to farming outside the EU and its Common Agricultural Policy. However, others are starting to set out what a new approach to UK agriculture, outside the EU, might look like.
