Find estimates of households off the gas grid for constituencies in Great Britain.
This page provides estimates of households that are off the gas grid for each parliamentary constituency in Great Britain.
Accessing the mains gas grid is the most common way in England, Wales, and Scotland to heat a home.
Properties that are off the gas grid do not have access to mains gas and rely on alternative sources of fuel such as heating oil, electric heating, or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
There is no sub-national data available for Northern Ireland, where the gas grid there is much less extensive.

There is no definitive source for the number of households not on the gas grid. Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s (DESNZ) estimates for the number and proportion of properties without mains gas are based on the difference between the number of properties and the number of domestic gas meters (including non-consuming meters), as published in the sub-national gas consumption data.
DESNZ does not publish figures for MSOAs where the number of gas meters has been suppressed (due to it being a smaller number). In practice, this means that most premises in missing MSOAs on the map above are not connected to the gas grid.
The latest data on heating type for Northern Ireland are for 2016 when only 24% of households used mains gas for heating. 67% used heating oil, by far the highest rate in the UK.
We aim to update this dashboard in line with the latest data releases from DESNZ, but the data shown here may not be the latest available. MPs and their staff can contact the Commons Library with queries about updates.
