    Wednesday, 20 April, 2016

In the July 2015 Budget the Government proposed scrapping the Climate Change Levy exemption which applies to electricity generated by renewable sources. National Insurance Contributions (Rate Ceilings) Bill 2015-16

    Monday, 29 February, 2016

The National Insurance Contributions (Rate Ceilings) Bill 2015-16 would prevent any increase in the current rates of Class 1 National Insurance contributions paid by employees and employers for the duration of the 2015-20 Parliament. It would also provide that the Upper Earnings Limit could not exceed the higher rate threshold - the sum of the personal allowance and the basic rate limit - as proposed by the Government in its pre-Budget proposals.

Debate on an e-petition on a tax on sugary drinks

    Friday, 27 November, 2015

This pack has been compiled ahead of the debate on A tax on sugary drinks in Westminster Hall on Monday 30 November 2015 at 4.30pm. The subject of this debate has been chosen by the Petitions Committee and will consider ePetition 106651: Introduce a tax on sugary drinks in the UK to improve our children's health. Experts believe a tax of just 7p per regular-sized can of soft drink with added sugar could generate £1 billion per year. We believe this crucial revenue should be ring-fenced to support much needed preventative strategies in the NHS and schools around childhood obesity and diet-related disease. The Government responded: The Government has no plans to introduce a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. The Government will announce its plans for tackling childhood obesity by the end of the year.

Landfill Tax (Qualifying Fines) Order 2015

    Wednesday, 17 June, 2015

Following a consultation exercise, in December 2014 the Coalition Government confirmed that from 1 April 2015, landfill site operators would be able to use a new 'Loss on Ignition' (LOI) test, to ensure they charged the right rate of landfill tax on 'fines' - residual waste from waste processing. Operators would be able to charge the lower rate of tax on 'fines' meeting certain criteria. This Order would introduce the new test. It is not expected to have an Exchequer impact.
